Roundtable Discussion: “The Current State of Early Music”*

Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music is generating increasing interest every day, both among long-time music lovers and emerging audiences. The discussions at the opening of Early Music Morella aim to reflect on this exciting trend from different perspectives. This year’s participants include Montserrat Grañeras, expert Director of Artistic Education at the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training; Javier Estrella, long-time director of the veteran and popular Aranjuez Early Music Festival; and Carlos Santos, a charismatic specialist in classical radio and journalism. Juan Ángel Vela del Campo, a staunch supporter of the philosophy and cultural dimension of Early Music Morella, will moderate, or rather, lead the dialogue among these distinguished guests. The discussion will explore the reasons and misconceptions behind the continued relevance of early music in contemporary times; the importance of a place like Morella for discussing the connections between different spaces, regions, and countries; and the passage of time and its cultural impact. The discussions will focus on the commitment to history, the quality and important discographic legacy of the Capella de Ministrers and its exemplary team led by Carles Magraner, and, ultimately, on whatever emerges and interests the audience. These dialogues have become a Festival tradition thanks to their fresh perspective and the exchange of opinions among the participants. They are usually as entertaining as they are informative.

Moderator: Juan Ángel Vela del Campo
